Sanlam Cape Town Marathon nominated AWMM candidate

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is a prestigious city race. The event holds Gold label status for road marathons and is home to the ASA Marathon Championship. 

Sanlam Cape Town Marathon welcomes all athletes – social and elite, great and small, fast-runners and first-timers –  to the event’s early-spring start-line. The marathon’s route, carved out by mountain range and seaside, sees racers weave through Cape Town’s city streets – cooled by the shadow of world-renowned Table Mountain and greeted by the Atlantic Ocean sea air. The route navigates through an immersive journey of Cape Town and captures many of the city’s cultural highlights, diverse communities and neighbourhoods. 

An event that has always strived to capture the vibrant spirit of Africa’s most visited cities, Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is honoured and delighted to announce its confirmation as an Abbott World Marathon Major (AbbottWMM candidate). 

As the first marathon in Africa to be nominated, Sanlam Cape Town Marathon’s message is clear, “Africa is our home. This is our race.”  

Sanlam Cape Town Marathon Chairman, Francois Pienaar announced the year 2022 as the official first race for the AbbottWMM candidate process. Pienaar assured that 2022’s event will be delivered with innovations and world-class quality, as it has consistently achieved in previous years.  

Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has officially announced that 2022 race entries are open for the next (-/+) month; an event that is the start of a 3-year assessment process allowing for major status as early as 2025. Pienaar shared, “this status would be a tremendous boost for the city, country and continent. Africa is home to the best marathon runners in the world and we hope they will get the opportunity to run an Abbott World Marathon Major on home turf in the coming years.”
